The PopUp Tour Meets re:publica
October 12, 2019
A new day at the Wunderbar Together PopUp Tour began with an exciting series of talks by BMW focusing on “Design for Mobility.” During the talks, hosted by Designworks, visitors could learn more about the connection between future mobility trends and urban design, sustainable system designs for urban areas, and more while also discovering more about the BMW Group’s international design innovation studio and its work on mobility.
After an opening keynote by Dieter Kempf, President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), the panel featured a number of speakers, including Matthew Arnold, the Directors of Urban Design and Planning at SERA Architects and Becky Steckler of the Sustainable Cities Institute at the University of Oregon and the Urbanism Next Program Director.
Following the panel, the PopUp Tour once again invited local students to join the fun with a special program for students at the German International School of Portland. The students and their families participated in fun activities like a story time and sing-a-long for preschool through 3rd graders, a choir performance by the 4th and 5th grade students, and much more!
The kids were also on hand for a Portland edition of the famed Kids Science Slam by Policult, which pits two American and two German junior scientists against each other in TED-talk style “battles” that combine science, creativity, and wit. The trick is to present real scientific research in a way that is both fun and accessible to a wider audience – all in under 10 minutes! At the end of the competition, the audience decided on Portland champion!
That afternoon, participants continued to learn and exchange ideas when re:publica came to the PopUp Tour tent as a part of the Sequencer Tour for a day full of discussions, talks, and workshops. Each session was free and open to the public and covered topics like “100 Solutions to Global Warming,” “From Farm to Fork: Shaping Future Food Supply Chains,” and “From Screen to Street: Activism in the Smartphone Era.” The first panel, “ASAP,” featured Member of German Parliament Peter Beyer, BDI President Dieter Kempf, and Jeannine Koch, the Director of re:publica.
After an exciting day of fun games, educational talks, and hands-on learning, the day closed with a timely discussion on “Germany & the US: Shaping Our Transatlantic Future” between Dieter Kempf, President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) and Peter Beyer, member of the German Bundestag and Coordinator of Transatlantic Cooperation in the Field of Intersocietal Relations, Cultural and Information Policy. The talk, moderated by Karen Wilde Goddin, former Managing Direction for Business, Innovation, and Trade with Business Oregon, and held in partnership with WorldOregon, focused on the current state of U.S.-German relations and how the future of prosperity, trade, and economics, freedom and civil society in Europe, and global security hinges on a reinvigorated transatlantic cooperation.
The PopUp Tour will be back tomorrow for one final day of fun, learning, and art with more Bauhaus, re:publica, and Science Slams! Check out the PopUp Tour website for more information!
