The WanderbUS Stops in Chicago

May 30, 2019

The Goethe WanderbUS is traveling to 60 schools this year on a mission to visit students all 48 contiguous states as a part of the Year of German-American Friendship. With its first cross-country trip from Virginia to California in the books, the WanderbUS is making its way back to the east coast one stop at a time.

Most recently, the WanderbUS brought its exciting program of interactive technology and fun language games to Hayt Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois. This time, Johannes Ebert, Chairman of the Board for Goethe-Institut, attended the event to meet with students and join in on the fun!

Susan Feiler, a German teacher at the school, was thrilled to see her students so enthusiastic about the activities aboard the bus. “Our students are so excited!” she said. “They’re seeing so many different kinds of new technologies and different ways to explore sustainability and STEM. It’s great.”

Using technology and entertainment to discuss such diverse topics was especially helpful for teaching her young students basic language skills.

“Some of the activities here that they’ve done are in very simple German, and that helps the kids to see how German connects to something outside of the classroom.”
