This week’s story was written by Mitchell Schaub about celebrating Oktoberfest and his German heritage in Milwaukee, Wisconsin!

Milwaukee has a deep pride in its German heritage. From brewers like Frederick Miller and Colonel G.W. Pabst, to sausage makers like Klement and Usinger, Milwaukee is synonymous with German heritage for most Americans. When I first moved to Milwaukee, my wife and I went to German Fest in downtown Milwaukee. Thousands of people gathered, in dirndls and lederhosen to dance to German music and enjoy the steins of delicious Oktoberfest-style beers. It was a beautiful day at the lakefront, and it was moving for this German-American to see so many people celebrating our culture. As a third generation American, I have always felt close to my roots, but living in Milwaukee has really deepened the pride I feel in being German-American.
