This week’s story was written by Vicki Fulimeni, who met her German husband in Luxemburg.
In 2014, I was fortunate enough to be selected for an ex-pat assignment with my international company. I was happy to be able to move to Luxembourg to work, learn about different cultures, and travel to new exciting countries. After being there less than a year, I met the most remarkable German man. We had so much in common and a similar upbringing, even though he was born and raised in Germany, and I was born and raised in the U.S. We were married in October 2016, and it has been wonderful. We enjoy cooking for each other and trying foods from our countries. He introduced me to schnitzel and maultaschen, and I taught him about tacos! Every day, I’m reminded about relationships between the U.S. and Germany; I’m thankful for each of our countries. Both of our lives have become richer because we have listened and learned about each other’s cultures. We’re living in the U.S. now, but we still seek out German festivals and order bread directly from Germany (U.S. bread doesn’t compare to German bread). We enjoy talking to friends about our experiences and continuing to learn from each other.
