Wunderbar Together Celebrates its One Year Anniversary on the Day of German Unity!
The Day of German Unity is one of the most important federal holidays in Germany. Held every year on October 3, it celebrates the reunification of East and West Germany in the 1990s. This year is even more special, as we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
One year ago, the German Foreign Ministry, the Goethe-Institut, and the Federation of German Industries (BDI) kicked off the Year of German-American Friendship at events in several cities all over the country, including Atlanta, Indianapolis, and Los Angeles.
At a reception at the Ambassador’s residence in Washington, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas gave a speech detailing his intentions and aspirations for Wunderbar Together, officially opening a week of launch week events.
The event also featured light art by URBANSCREEN, a German design studio that projects fantastic light shows onto the sides of iconic buildings. They brought the German Ambassador’s residence to life with a special show that highlighted German words that have been adapted into the English language.
The next day, the general public was introduced to Wunderbar Together when Flying Steps, a Berlin-based breakdance troupe, performed for a crowd in front of the Lincoln Memorial. People of all ages and backgrounds gathered to bust a move and see how this quintessentially American style of dance is performed in Germany.
Since then, Wunderbar Together has supported 2,000 events in all 50 states promoting German-American Friendship with over 350 partners in sports, business, science, and politics from both sides of the Atlantic. These projects have brought the German-American relationship alive for Americans of all backgrounds from coast to coast.
Tonight, Wunderbar Together will celebrate a successful year of fun and friendship where it all began with a special reception at the German Ambassador’s Residence in Washington, DC.
We will also be returning to the Lincoln Memorial tomorrow, October 4, to continue the celebration with all of DC. This time, German techno marching band MEUTE will perform a free concert in front of the reflecting pool. The music starts at noon. Hope to see you there!
For a sneak preview of Friday’s performance, check out this video from last night’s concert at U Street Music Hall in Washington, DC.
