World Leaders Gather in Portsmouth, United Kingdom to Commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day
On June 5, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Donald Trump joined World War II veterans and the heads of state of 13 other countries for a moving ceremony dedicated to those who stormed the beaches of Normandy as a part of Operation Overlord. The efforts of these brave soldiers led to an Allied victory that turned the tide of the war on the continent and built the foundation for our current German-American friendship.
Speaking on American involvement in the war, President Trump read an excerpt from the prayer read by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the American public on the radio the night Allied forces landed upon the beaches of Normandy.
In her speech, Chancellor Merkel called it a “gift of history” that she could take part in this event and remarked that “This unique military operation eventually brought us liberation from the Nazis.”
Adversaries in the war, the United States and Germany have since built a strong military partnership. Today, these two countries’ militaries carry out regular joint military exercises together with their fellow NATO allies to ensure continued peace and stability.
