American Players Take the Field in the German Bundesliga

August 20, 2019

FC Bayern Munich’s recent signing of Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho is just the latest in a series of high-level signings demonstrating that the Bundesliga is an increasingly attractive destination for elite players. Several American players, including top players on the US Men’s National Team, have made the journey across the pond to play for German clubs.

American superstar and US Men’s National Team fixture Christian Pulisic began his professional career in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, where he became the youngest non-German player ever to score a goal in the Bundesliga at 17 and won the DFB-Pokal in the 2016-2017 season.

The Bundesliga season kicked off this weekend, and American players are already making their mark across the league. Fortuna Düsseldorf newcomer and Pennsylvania native Zack Steffen was named Man of the Matchday by the Bundesliga and appeared on the Elf des Tages as the top goalkeeper of the opening weekend by Kicker, the leading German sports magazine. Steffen had 9 saves in his team’s 3-1 victory over Werder Bremen.

As more and more Americans move to Germany, many German players are heading in the opposite direction to play for MLS clubs in the United States. To get ready for the beginning of the 2019/2020 Bundesliga season, we’ve compiled a list of some of the Americans and Germans playing abroad in the Bundesliga and MLS!
