Pentagon staffer John Masters visited East and West Germany as a child before the wall fell. “When there was a wall in Berlin, I went up as a small boy through East Germany … we weren’t supposed to look outside the windows. I was glad to see it happen.”
Former McDaniel College Professor of German Mohammed Esa was a graduate student studying in Germany when the wall fell. “It was a universal feeling of liberation. These people were hugging everyone, they were smiling, they were incredibly happy.”
American television journalist and author Tom Brokaw was one of the few people who witnessed the actual collapse of the wall. “I went there not knowing the wall was going to come down. It still is one of the most memorable things I’ve ever done.”

This weekend, in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is traveling to Germany to meet with his German counterpart, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier recently made an official visit to Boston, his second visit to the United States since becoming president. During his time in Massachusetts, he attended several events promoting German-American friendship, included the grand re-opening of the new location of Goethe-Institut Boston.
