Hexadome Makes its Final Stop on its North American Tour in Massachusetts
November 22, 2019

After two successful stops at the Gray Area Festival in San Francisco and the MUTEK festival in Montreal as a part of Wunderbar Together, the ISM Hexadome is returning to the East Coast for a special exhibition at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA)!
This immersive, 360° audiovisual exhibition, developed by the Berlin Institute for Sound and Music, invites visitors to step inside the Hexadome: a hexagonal structure with 52 speakers and six video screens, one on each side, playing innovative, omni-sensory works by renowned artists. In addition to ten installations specially commissioned for the Hexadome, the MASS MoCA exhibit will also feature a re-imagining of the 1984 fantasy film, The Neverending Story, running on a continuous loop.
The Neverending Story is the second film to be adapted exclusively for the ISM Hexadome and takes the audience on a “shared VR” journey through the mythical world of Fantasia.
The commissioned installations were created by a collection of world-renowned artists, including Suzanne Ciani, Thom Yorke, Holly Herndon, and Peter Van Hoesen. The unique format of the Hexadome allowed these creators to craft works that use video and sound in new and exciting ways.
The MASS MoCA will also be hosting the first-ever ISM Experiential Learning Program. The program, designed in partnership with the Berklee Interdisciplinary Arts Institute, will give students and faculty the opportunity to use the ISM Hexadome as an immersive installation case study for fine art.
The installation is currently on view and will remain at the MASS MoCA until December 2. Find out more information about the exhibition and the individual installations on the ISM website.
