Wunderbar Together 2018/2019
From October 2018 to the end of 2019, Germany celebrated a Year of German-American Friendship knowing that the United States and Germany are Wunderbar Together ― stronger as friends and partners.
With this initiative, we focused on our robust relationship, rooted in deep historic ties, shared values, and bold visions for the future. We also recalled how after the end of World War II, transatlantic partnership ushered in a unique era of peace, freedom, and security. For us Germans, the United States remains our closest partner outside Europe.
Our friendship with the United States means a lot to us, as we know it does to many Americans. That is why people were at the heart of this Year of German-American Friendship. Throughout the year, we sought to renew the dialogue with our American friends about the importance of our relationship and how we can shape it for the future. As we face shared challenges and societies become more divided, we must build more – and stronger – bridges between our peoples.
Working with over 450 partners, we showcased our close bonds with over 2,500 events in all 50 states. We painted a picture of everything German-American relations stand for, including science, the arts, culture, language, business, and sports. We wanted to create an exchange of ideas with all Americans, not just in New York, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, but also in the heart of the country.
Wunderbar Together 2018/19 was a comprehensive and collaborative initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, implemented by the Goethe-Institut, and supported by the Federation of German Industries (BDI).
We are thankful to the hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country who joined our celebration and embodied the stories at the core of German-American friendship.
